BOLES: A Short Puppet Animation by Špela Čadež

Filip lives in a poor neighbourhood. He dreams of writer’s glory and luxurious lifestyle in a more prosperous part of town. One day Filip gets a knock on the door. His neighbour Tereza, an older prostitute that Filip tries to avoid by all means, asks him to write a letter for her fiancé. Filip agrees. And it would all end up fine if a week later Tereza would not show up at his doorstep again, asking him to write an answer to the previous letter.

Based on the short story “Her Lover” by Maksim Gorky.

Blooms: Strobe Animated Sculptures by John Edmark

Blooms are 3-D printed sculptures designed to animate when spun under a strobe light.

Unlike a 3D zoetrope, which animates a sequence of small changes to objects, a bloom animates as a single self-contained sculpture. The bloom’s animation effect is achieved by progressive rotations of the golden ratio, phi (ϕ), the same ratio that nature employs to generate the spiral patterns we see in pinecones and sunflowers. The rotational speed and strobe rate of the bloom are synchronized so that one flash occurs every time the bloom turns 137.5º (the angular version of phi).* Each bloom’s particular form and behavior is determined by a unique parametric seed I call a phi-nome (/fī nōm/). -John Edmark

John Edmark is an artist, designer, and inventor. He teaches at Stanford University.

The Itching

The Itching is a 2016 clay animation film short, written and directed by Dianne Bellino and animated by Adam Davies.

The film follows a shy wolf who attends a dance party thrown by a group of hip, freewheeling bunnies. Though the wolf longs to connect with the exotic strangers, anxiety overwhelms her, and she descends into obsessive itching.

An intensely visceral film, warm-hearted and disturbing, The Itching investigates our primal longing for connection and reveals the vulnerability, anxiety, and ambivalence embedded there.
