Matteo Uggeri :: Grandpa

Matteo UggeriGrandpa” ★ Label: Fluid Audio ★ Released 04 August 2017 ★

Matteo Uggeri’s approach to musical composition has always been related to his personal experience in life; to recent, or more distant, memories. Differing from other experimental artists who also explore field recordings, he often delves within the walls of his own house, or those of his close acquaintances and family, for inspiration. The recent rediscovery, during his last house move, of an old cassette dating back to the 8th of December 1976, threw him back to the day when Lucio, his paternal grandfather, sort of interviewed Matteo when he was about two and half years old.

That shabby hissing tape became the starting point of a long composition, completed in one long night of July 2016. An ambient composition with a looped four minutes melody (gifted to him by Vincenzo Nava, another Italian musician known as Dramavinile), is interspersed with sparse melancholic notes of a Bontempi toy organ that Uggeri has owned since his early youth. This one-track-long CD, his first attempt at creating this type of musical journey, is now available on Fluid Audio.

The result is a deep and touching dive into blurred memories. The crackling hiss of Vincenzo Nava’s guitar melts into the ‘interview’ speeches of the Grandfather to the child, accompanied by the minimal echoed organ melodies by Matteo himself. The latter element is a very rare attempt at creating music other than through his loved, and hated, computer.

Empowered by the usual careful mastering of James Plotkin, the composition flows slow and crumbling for more than thirty melancholic minutes.

Correlations :: Night Acquisitions

CorrelationsNight Acquisitions” ★ Label: Spun Out Of Control ★ Releases 11 Aug. 2017 ★

Correlations‘ second full length release explores a heavier electronic palette, allowing the Oscar synthesiser to take centre stage.

Mainstay Neil Hale first played with the legendary synth whilst working on tracks with Toydrum – the electronic duo’s Pablo Clements being credited as co-writer on Night Acquisitions‘ title track.

A handful of other tracks here evolved out of the same productive sessions.

Inspiration was also found in otherworldly contemporary film scores, including Gravity & A Field in England, which helped coalesce ideas into this stunningly realised soundtrack for an imaginary film.

Cassette J-card design & layout by Eric Adrian Lee.

Adrian Lane :: Playing With Ghosts

Adrian LanePlaying With Ghosts” ★ Label: Preserved Sound ★ Releases 18 August 2017 ★

On his album “Playing With Ghosts“, Adrian Lane uses 100-year-old cylinder recordings as the starting point for new compositions – chopping them up, reordering them and playing along to build up a series of completely new compositions.

“I’ve always liked the idea of collage and often include this in my visual art,” says Adrian. “So I wanted to do something that incorporated this approach in my music.”

While the concept of Playing With Ghosts is similar to James Leyland Kirby’s The Caretaker project, Adrian uses the cylinder recordings to build up each piece so that it bears little resemblance to the original.

Ben Lovett :: Synchronicity

Ben LovettSynchronicity” ★ Label: Lakeshore Records ★ Released 25 June 2017 ★

In partnership with Lakeshore Records, Megatapes presents SYNCHRONICITY Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on CASSETTE.

The album features the film’s original score by Ben Lovett, his sixth collaboration with Writer/Director Jacob Gentry.

What better way to evoke the sound of an 80’s film score than listening to it on cassette? Megatapes founder, John Bergin, says; “Every time I listen to music on cassette I am stunned by the warmth and clarity of the sound, especially when I listen to music that I am very familiar with. I’ve listened to Ben’s SYNCHRONICITY score nearly a hundred times. The first time I heard it on cassette, it was like hearing it for the first time – there is incredible detail and saturation in the sound. Cassettes offer a listening experience unlike any other format.”

The cassette features a new illustrated cover by John Bergin and is a Limited Edition of 250.

He She Them Us” is an album of precise, purposeful electronica that recalls and expands upon the output of labels like Mille Plateaux, April Records, raster-noton and City Centre Offices in the early 2000s. The music is not purely electronic though, atop the bursts of static and staccato beats are many layers of field recordings and live instrumentation.
