Jon Hassell :: Listening To Pictures (Pentimento Volume 01)

Jon HassellListening To Pictures” ★ Label: Ndeya ★ Released 08 June 2018 ★

Reappearance in a painting of earlier images, forms, or strokes that have been changed and painted over.

First new album in nine years by a musical visionary and hugely influential figure in new music. Forty years since its creation, Jon Hassell‘s Fourth World aesthetic remains a powerful influence on modern electronic music. Continuing his lifelong exploration of the possibilities of recombination and musical gene-splicing, fragments of performance are sampled, looped, overdubbed and re-arranged into beguiling unexpected shapes. Hassell applies the painterly technique of ‘pentimento’ to the arrangements, teasing out texture by the overlaying of sound upon sound, or a carefully timed reveal of the delicate bones pinning the frame of a track together.

Turquoise Moon :: Midnight Demon

➲ Turquoise Moon “Midnight Demon” ★ Label: Spun Out Of Control ★ Rel. 01 June 2018 ★

Re-discovering Turquoise Moon’s other-worldly score to ‘Midnight Demon’:

Turquoise Moon were an American synth duo of Terry Ferrello and Frank Heisenberg, recording and releasing music from 1981 to ‘86. The pair met in ’81 while living in Mountain View, California, and working as game developers for Atari Inc. Here they discovered a shared fascination for synthesisers and drum machines that they cracked, modified and rebuilt. Choosing the name Turquoise Moon, the duo wrote instrumental music out of Frank’s basement, which they self released on cassette via independent stores and fanzines throughout the Bay Area during 1982.

One of these rare tapes made its way to the hands of LA-based writer and director Kyle Caruso, who had cut his teeth directing commercials for the automotive and high end perfume industries and was about to embark on shooting his first feature film. That film was Midnight Demon.

Artwork and design by Eric Adrian Lee.

Presented as a limited edition, hand numbered cassette in a choice of two colours.
Choose from ‘Purple Prey’ or ‘Neon Blue’ coloured shells (75 copies of each).

Wojciech Golczewski :: End Of Transmission 2

Wojciech GolczewskiEnd Of Transmission 2” ★ Label: Data Airlines ★ Rel. 20 May 2018 ★

Following closely after is the sequel to Golczewski’s popular space epic that started of with Reality Check and continued with End Of Transmission and The Signal. Without words, End of Transmission 2 continues to recount the fate of a deep space exploration mission but this time from the point of view of the AI that the mission brought with them. End Of Transmission 2 is at times a more hopeful chapter to the story but still carries the same both claustrophobic and epic atmosphere familiar to fans of the previous records.

Limited Edition of Wojciech Golczewski’s End Of Transmission 2 Cassette recorded onto a Matte Vintaged Silver Shelled Audio Cassette with a heavy duty J-Card with high quality print.

Limited edition of 100.

Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein :: Stranger Things 2

➲ Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein “Stranger Things 2” ★ Lakeshore Rec. ★ Rel. 23 March 2018 ★

EMMY®-winning and Grammy®-nominated Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, half of the Austin band S U R V I V E, traveled back in musical time to score the award-winning Netflix original series “Stranger Things.” Series creators The Duffer Brothers tapped the duo due to their classic synths spun into distinctly modern sounds—and the resulting alchemy produced a Primetime Emmy Award win for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music, two Grammy nominations for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, an ASCAP Composers’ Choice Award nomination for TV Composer(s) of the Year, and a World Soundtrack Award nomination for TV Composer(s) of the Year.

Dixon and Stein, both Texas natives, were born in the early 1980s when the inspirations for “Stranger Things” were being made. They met as teenagers and both gravitated towards the analog, electronic tones of their childhoods. S U R V I V E has quickly exploded from being a hip Austin act to touring the U.S. and Europe, and the band recently released their second studio album, “RR7349.”

Moss Covered Technology :: And His Many Seas

Moss Covered TechnologyAnd His Many Seas” ★ Self-released ★ Released 30 April 2018 ★

‘His Many Seas’ is a personal voyage, as the artist’s father was suffering from cancer at the time of the album being written. A well-travelled man, ‘His Many Seas’ sets sail to quietly conquer and navigate another unexplored, painful continent: the frightening landmass of coming to terms with his father’s illness, steering through the trials of life as well as acting as a dedication to his father’s love of travelling. The illness itself heralded the beginnings of a new journey. Recalling the feel of the Arctic Ocean, ‘His Many Seas’ thematically revolves around exploration, and the release includes vintage nautical Nories tables, Elisha Kent Kane – Arctic Exploration inserts along with ‘famous explorer’ double side prints.

Stepping bravely out into icy waters and leaving behind a port always known, that being a lifetime of familiarity, comfort, and love, Moss Covered Technology paints a cold sea composed of blue tones, the chilled air seeping into the cabins of the heart through cracks in its frost-rimmed windows. Through this crack, feelings of sadness, anxiety and hopelessness slither in, making a nest in the heart of the ship. Some of the background textures clink and creak, like the breaking of ice, and the record charts a melancholic course. ‘His Many Seas’ is the sound of an ending, but it’s also a maiden voyage.

Soaked textures and sparse, frostbitten melodies loop in the frigid air, almost as if they can’t remember their place, or where they are in relation to everything else. The grey sea looks the same. Its horizon never differs. But music can act as a compass, a North Star, in times of trouble, during tempests and unquiet seas, and this ambient Polaris guides the artist back home. Music can return a soul to safe shores after a period of brokenness.

OGRE :: BALLARD

OGREBALLARD” ★ Label: Data Airlines ★ Released 25 February 2018 ★

This is a very limited pressing of tracks from The Psychic Zero and The Cosmic Fugue albums, completely remastered, and with new art by signalstarr.

Side A (Track 1-7):

Inspired by the short story ‘The Zone Of Terror’ by J. G. Ballard.

After a nervous breakdown, Larsen retreats to a desert resort under the care of psychologist Bayliss. A series of psychoretinal hallucinations begin to evolve, induced by Bayliss’ course of psilocybin treatment; the spectres of translucent men walk amongst the uninhabited chalets, as Larsen falls outside of time.

Side B:

Based on the short stories ‘News from the Sun’, ‘Memories of the Space Age’ & ‘Myths of the Near Future’ by J. G. Ballard.

The space grounds along Cape Canaveral lie empty. Abandoned launch sites, the husks of the Apollo missions, litter the coastline. Space flight has brought about a psychic fissure: a fugue inducing space sickness. Humanity succumbs to a debilitating, timeless trance. A lone astronaut, responsible for the first murder in space, haunts his victims among the deserted Florida hotels.
